Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are only mildly toxic to cats and dogs due to the presence of chemicals called diterpenoid euphorbol esters and saponin-like detergents in their milky white sap. To successfully grow and maintain your poinsettia plants, make sure to place them in a bright, indirect light and keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Poinsettias prefer temperatures between 65-70°F during the day and 60-65°F at night. Avoid exposing the plants to drafts, extreme heat or cold, and fertilize them with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.   1. Light Preference - Poinsettias can thrive in normal indoor light levels, but avoid direct sunlight as it can cause rapid drying of plants.

  2. Temperature - Maintain cool temperatures (68° to 72°F; 20° to 22°C) for the plants.

  3. Soil - Poinsettias require a well-drained soil mix, and the media should be kept uniformly moist.

  4. Watering - Ensure that the soil is uniformly moist at all times as drying out will reduce plant longevity. Submerge the entire root system in water if the plant becomes dry.

  5. Grooming - Remove dead bracts as needed.

  6. Selecting Poinsettia - Choose plants with healthy green leaves and colorful bracts, without missing, bruised, broken, or spray damaged leaves.

  7. Winter Care - Place your poinsettia in a sunny window or the brightest area of the room, and water when the soil becomes dry. Never let the plant wilt or lose its leaves.
